Day 138

3/29/2019

Fridays are good. Usually. Day 138? That means the school year is 23/30ths of the way done. Only 7/30ths left to go.
The Chemistry students saw what happens if you screw up the Explosion Lab on a planet other than Earth. It isn't good.  Maybe they learned we also exhale oxygen. Did you know that? It isn't just carbon dioxide. We exhale oxygen and nitrogen, too. If we didn't, CPR wouldn't work and, in fact, it would kill people faster. Think about it.
The AP Biology students did some of the grid-in math questions from an old AP Biology Exam today. I have to admit, I did pretty good on them and I'm no math or biology genius. In some ways, this exam is just one big logic test. Kinda. Well, it's good to know some biology before you take it.

It's pay day tonight at around 2 AM. Did you know that? Or do you even care?  You would if you had a job.
T
he Chemistry students completed the now famous Explosion Lab today. Mix together hydrogen and oxygen gases (and nothing else), light a match and watch what happens! It's great!
The AP Biology students did a bunch of multiple choice questions from the 2016 AP Biology Exam.  We got the chance to go over some of them but not all of them which would be pretty obvious if you read the first part of that sentence. We'll check more out tomorrow.

Wednesday used to be a good day. I'm not sure it is anymore. It exists, it's just not that good.
The Chemistry students worked with the material of the Explosion Lab today to produce hydrogen gas. We did that and then lit the hydrogen on fire.  Pretty fun but the cool stuff is coming tomorrow in the form of pure oxygen.
The AP Biology students tried their hand at answering some free response questions from the 2016 AP Biology Exam. I think it went well. Students who take AP exams are strongly encouraged to STUDY, STUDY AND STUDY!!!!!

Is Spring Break ever going to come? It better!
The Chemistry students saw the actual Explosion Lab in action today.  I synthesized hydrogen and oxygne gas and mixed them together and lit them on fire. It was great.  Tomorrow, the students will make hydrogen and the next day they will mix those two aforementioned gases together.
The AP Biology students took the Microorganisms and Disease Exam today. Next stop, a 3 day review of the AP Exam material!

The last week of the worst month. And the Sweet 16 are set!
The Chemistry students saw 5 minutes of The Martian.  I wanted to show them how air pressure was represented in this movie and they did a pretty accurate job except for the huge dust storm thing.  We then talked about the safety and materials of the Explosion Lab which takes place this week!  It should be good.
The AP Biology students listened to me drone on and on about the Microorganisms and Disease Exam which is tomorrow. I went over, in mind-crushingly boring detail the review stuff I passed out last week.  Well, the sub passed it out. I was too busy watching hoops.

I was gone today because I wasn't here. I was in San Jose watching UC Irvine beat Kansas State, Oregon beat Wisconsin, Liberty beat Mississippi State and Virginia Tech beat St. Louis.  It was awesome!
The Chemistry students took the Gas Laws Quiz today and then watched some of the March Madness tournament.  Yay college!
The AP Biology students received a review guide for the Microorganisms and Disease Exam which happens next Tuesday!

Today is almost my favorite day of the whole school year.  IT'S MARCH MADNESS VIEWING TIME!!!!
The Chemistry students reviewed some Gas Law stuff.  We didn't have the quiz today because 1st Period didn't get to review it because of the PSAT yesterday.  So we reviewed and watched 64 teams slug it out for basketball supremacy. It was great!
The AP Biology students did kinda the same thing except we reviewed some stuff for the Microorganisms and Disease Exam which is next week!

Day 131

It seems the Spring brings weird school days.  Like today.  The annual PSAT-10 was given to all 10th graders and it really screws up the teaching day.  All the sophomores are out in the morning and that messes with afternoon classes.
So....... no 1st Period today.  5th and 6th period Chemistry went to the library to do 1 of 2 things.  Students either finished their extra credit for March Madness (which is due tomorrow) or they can work on the Power Point below which will help them on the quiz tomorrow. Yup, we have a quiz tomorrow!
There was no AP Biology today.

It feels like rain again. Or at least some dew in the morning.  The air smells oceany which is a thing.
The Chemistry students went to the library today for the one and only day of research and art work for the extra credit March Madness thing. Think about extra credit for a minute. What a joke. Extra credit? Is that like spare change? No such thing. The only reason I do it is to incorporate March Madness and the college experience into the mundane world of academia. Hahahahaha.
The AP Biology students finished their discussion of Bacteria and Archaea today and will talk some Protists on Thursday. The Chapter 27 Reading Guide was turned in today, too.

It's March Madness time!!!! All the classes participated in the Annual Team Assignment where each student is randomly assigned teams from the field of 68.  The students then can choose whether or not to get some extra credit through a couple of different methods.  I love this week. Watching hoops during a science class is great!
