Day 14

9/3/2015

This week is flying by! Which really isn't a good thing, right? Don't we all want to stop and smell the roses, as it were?
The AP Biology students continued their discussion of macromolecules.  We discussed lipids which, of course, we broke down into fats, phospholipids and steroids.  Ahh, steroids. Kinda reminds me of the 2003 and Barry's assault on home run records.
The Biology students began the microscope lab by creating their own wet mount slides of small sections of newspaper and overlapping pieces of thread. By doing this, the students can comprehend how the microscope lenses invert the image to be viewed and how important an understanding of the depth of field of the microscope is when viewing 3-dimensionsal objects. BTW, all objects viewed are 3-dimensional.
The Chemistry students studied chemical reactions today by viewing the combustion of wood in 20% oxygen, the combustion of wood in 100% oxygen, the combustion of hydrogen in 20% oxygen and the combustion of hydrogen in 100% oxygen.  We also watched the Hindenburg conduct its own experiment on combustion.
